The past decade has been a very exciting time to be a part of MACC! Through the expansion of both academic and workforce programs throughout our service region, we have experienced significant growth. With campuses in Columbia, Hannibal, Kirksville, Mexico, and Moberly, MACC has truly become a regional institution. In the coming years, higher education institutions will have to deal with a decrease in traditional-age students attending college due to smaller high school graduating classes. Recruitment of these students will be more competitive than ever. Student-athletes often decide which college to attend based on their ability to continue participating in sports. Having the option to continue to compete may be a deciding factor in bringing students to our campus.
While MACC has a long and rich tradition around Lady Greyhound and Greyhound basketball, the college has not developed any additional sports for several decades. After much deliberation, the Board of Trustees approved the advent of softball and baseball as two new sports programs to be added to the MACC-Moberly campus. The inaugural season for both teams will occur in the 2022-2023 academic year. This news has been greeted with much enthusiasm throughout MACC’s service region and beyond.
There are many positives these new programs will bring to MACC-Moberly. We know these student-athletes will bring new excitement and energy to our campus climate and increase the number of traditional students enrolled full-time and living on the Moberly campus. These programs have been designed to recruit local students, giving them the opportunity to continue to play softball and baseball at the collegiate level close to home and the ability to use their A+ scholarship. Both programs will compete as NJCAA Division II programs.
To accommodate the housing needs of these new student-athletes and increase available housing for all students on the Moberly campus, the Board of Trustees approved the construction of a new dorm at their January 2022 meeting. We have since begun phase one of construction which will be completed for the fall 2022 semester. This phase is a total renovation of the former bookstore/warehouse located across from the existing dorm. Phase two of construction consists of a new addition to the renovated dorm and will be completed by December 2022. Once the entire project is complete, the college will have a student housing capacity for up to 116 students.
Additionally, we believe Bringing the Hounds Home will benefit Moberly and the surrounding area as well. Increasing student housing on campus means an increase in students in the community over the short-term. The local economy will be enriched when students shop and eat at local establishments. In the long run, it will result in more students connecting to Moberly and MACC. These connections make a lasting impact and keep former students connected to our community long after their time at MACC.
We believe an investment in MACC housing is not only an investment in MACC but an investment in the Moberly community. MACC invites you to join this exciting venture. Take a moment to read through this guide and consider supporting this important investment.
